Legislative Report (18 September 2025)

Megan Patterson MLA Moose Jaw Wakamow

Legislative Report
September 18, 2025

September is quickly slipping by as your Saskatchewan Party government continues to visit as many communities as possible to hear from the people of Saskatchewan.  Our MLAs always enjoy the summer season where they have the opportunity to attend graduations, community celebrations, tour medical facilities and meet as many Saskatchewanians as possible. Your government works every day to ensure our promises are met and the people of our great province can share their thoughts and ideas with us. We are listening and we appreciate your support.

Saskatchewan has more people calling our province home than ever before. One of the many reasons families are settling here is due to our strong employment opportunities. Saskatchewan continues to see record growth with 16,500 full-time jobs added year-over-year in August combined with the lowest unemployment rate amongst all provinces at 4.7 per cent. In August, another record was set with 534,300 people working full-time jobs in our province. Also, as mentioned by the Statistics Canada, employment is up over 10% in health care and social services compared to this time last year.

To complement our growing population and strong job market, housing starts in Saskatchewan saw a 49.8 per cent increase in the first eight months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This puts Saskatchewan first among the provinces for year-to-date growth.

Our strong finances are a pillar of our economic strength. Saskatchewan continues to maintain the second-lowest net-debt-to-GDP while also holding the highest credit rating among all provinces. Ensuring every dollar counts goes a long way in developing new programs like the Physician Assistants (PAs) degree program that was recently announced.

This month, 20 new students have joined the University of Saskatchewan's College of Medicine in the first cohort of the new Master of Physician Assistant Studies program. This milestone is a bold step in our government’s plan to train and recruit PAs right here at home as part of the Health Human Resources Action Plan. PAs are health professionals who have taken advanced training to practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician, often as part of a multidisciplinary health team. Additional health care investments announced this month are an upgraded air ambulance aircraft, new family medicine residency seats in several rural areas around Saskatchewan and infrastructure updates to long-term care facilities.

School playground infrastructure upgrades are now available through the new School Playground Equipment Grant program. This grant supports the incredible work done by volunteer school community councils and parent groups who raise money to create safe, accessible playgrounds for their children.  Eligible projects can receive up to $50,000 in matching funds to build a new playground or upgrade existing play structures. The application period is open and will close February 25, 2026. Grants will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

This week, we acknowledge Rail Safety Week. Our government is always looking for innovative ways to support workplace and public safety. The Ministry of Highways and short line Wheatland Rail have announced they will install and test a flashing LED railway crossing sign and broken rail detection system. Located on Highway 41 near Wakaw, this will be the first time such technology is used at a provincial short line railway highway crossing in Saskatchewan. The new system will detect the presence of a train and trigger flashing LED lights on the railway crossing signs to improve visibility and provide advance warning for motorists. It is also expected to detect broken rails at the crossing and notify railway operators to help mitigate derailments. Wheatland Rail and the Ministry of Highways expect to complete testing by September of 2026 to determine the success of the pilot project.

The Crop Report on September 18th, shared that many areas of the province received rainfall this past week causing producers to briefly pause harvest. Harvest is currently 53 per cent complete, which is a 12 per cent increase from last week. The five-year harvest progress average for this period is 73 per cent, while the 10-year average is 62 per cent. Despite the rain slowing progress, it is welcomed by producers in dry areas as it will improve soil moisture conditions.

Fall camping is underway until October 31 at many of our provincial parks including: Blackstrap Provincial Park, Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, Douglas Provincial Park, Duck Mountain Provincial Park, Echo Valley Provincial Park, Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park, Pike Lake Provincial Park, Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park and several more. Visit the Sask Parks website for full details on how to book. We hope you will be able to enjoy our beautiful province this season.
